Domain expiry via RDAP: renew before the brand dies
A forgotten domain renewal is an outage that looks like a hack. Public RDAP (the modern WHOIS path) is how CrowWake reads expiry when registries publish it.
What CrowWake checks
We query public RDAP (via rdap.org bootstrap) for an expiration event on the registered domain. Warn under 30 days; fail if already expired. When a registry does not expose expiry cleanly, the check stays unknown instead of inventing a date. The free domain expiry checker uses the same RDAP lookup with no login. Why it matters
Registrar reminder emails get filtered, land in the wrong inbox, or go to a contractor who left. Domains that lapse get parked, auctioned, or hijacked for phishing while SPF/DKIM still look fine in old screenshots. Agencies managing client fleets need a rooster for “expires soon,” not a spreadsheet nobody opens.
What “good enough” looks like
Auto-renew on at the registrar with a payment method that works. Calendar buffer of months, not days. For client fleets, one dashboard that surfaces “expires soon” across many names beats chasing WHOIS screenshots. SSL cert expiry is a different check — renew the registration and the certificate on separate clocks.
Renewal checklist (order matters)
1) Run the free domain expiry checker and note days remaining (or unknown). 2) Confirm the date in the registrar panel if RDAP is thin for that TLD. 3) Turn on auto-renew and verify the card/account on file. 4) Confirm apex DNS and TLS still look healthy after any registrar lock changes. 5) Add the domain so CrowWake crows under 30 days instead of waiting for a client panic email.

Renew at the registrar immediately. If RDAP is unknown, verify expiry in the registrar panel — not all TLDs publish the same fields. After renewal, wait for RDAP to catch up; CrowWake will clear once public data shows runway again. Re-run the free domain expiry checker to confirm the public signal matches what you renewed.
