What is an apex domain? Zone apex, bare domain, apex record

The apex is the root of your DNS zone—example.com, not www.example.com. An apex record is whatever answers there (A, AAAA, or a flattened alias). Get this wrong and websites, CDNs, and email all get weird in different ways.

What is an apex domain?

An apex domain (also called the zone apex or bare domain) is the name at the top of your DNS zone—example.com without www. Hostnames like www, mail, or api are subdomains under that apex. People search “what is an apex domain,” “what is a zone apex,” or “apex domain meaning” when a host or CDN asks them to point the apex somewhere.

What is an apex record?

An apex record is the DNS row at the zone apex—usually A and/or AAAA for example.com, shown as host @ in most panels. People search “apex record,” “apex DNS record,” or “dns zone apex record” when they need that @ row, not www. CrowWake’s free apex checker reads A, AAAA, and whether a CNAME is sitting on the bare name.

What is a zone apex?

“Zone apex” is the DNS term for the same thing: the root label of the zone (example.com). Registrars and panels often show it as host @ or a blank hostname. Editing www does not change the zone apex—if the site should answer on the bare domain, you must set A/AAAA or ALIAS there too.

CNAME on the bare domain

A raw CNAME on example.com conflicts with SOA/NS. That how-to (ALIAS, ANAME, CNAME flattening, and how to check) lives on the CNAME at apex guide. This page stays on “what is the apex / zone apex?”

What CrowWake checks

The free apex checker looks for A and AAAA at the apex, and whether a CNAME appears there. Missing address records → warn. A CNAME at the apex → warn so you notice flattening vs a mis-paste. CrowWake’s hourly DNS watch still tracks whether the apex resolves. For the repeat “watch zone apex hourly” job, see the dedicated apex monitoring guide.

Quick triage for apex DNS

1) Run the free apex checker and note A/AAAA vs CNAME-at-apex. 2) Confirm you edited host @ (blank), not only www. 3) If you need CDN apex, use the provider’s ALIAS/ANAME/flattening—not a raw CNAME beside SOA/NS. 4) Re-check DNS A and HTTPS after the change. 5) Add the domain so CrowWake crows if the apex goes dark.

What “good enough” looks like

Apex answers with the IPs (or flattened addresses) you expect. www is a separate choice (CNAME or A). If you use Cloudflare/Route53-style apex aliasing, public DNS should still resolve—CrowWake cares about what the internet sees, not the proprietary record type in your panel.

If something looks wrong

Confirm you edited the apex (@ / blank host), not only www. Remove an accidental apex CNAME if your DNS host does not flatten (see the CNAME at apex guide). After CDN moves, re-check A/AAAA and HTTPS. Then keep CrowWake watching so a silent apex wipe crows. For the hourly apex / zone-apex monitoring framing, see the dedicated guide.
